In several regions across the country, Canada Post has been calling CUPW members to lay them off. While some are saying it is temporary, we’ve heard stories that it may be more permanent. These types of phone calls are merely a scare tactic by Management. We urge members not to panic if you receive such a call. Instead, take note of what the management representative says and then request a record of employment and estimated date of return in order to allow you to apply for EI benefits.

With the Union issuing a 72-hour strike notice and the Employer issuing a 72-hour lockout notice, members should be aware that Canada Post has stated that as of November 15 at 8 a.m. ET, the collective agreements will no longer apply, and the Corporation will change working conditions. Nonetheless, all postal workers have basic rights under various federal legislation...

Following the publication of the arbitration award of Arbitrator MacPherson, Canada Post management formally requested that she correct her award with respect to the monetary increases for the variable allowance (householder delivery) and the knowledge sort and civic address allowance.

Fairly early on in this process, the parties were able to negotiate and sign language giving the Union access to the information that Canada Post uses to restructure letter carrier and RSMC routes. To many of you this may not appear to be related to overburdening, but it is one of the keys that will allow us to fully investigate how the data is used to restructure our routes.

Job Retention is new for RSMCs. Since RSMCs are now paid the derived hourly rate of Letter Carriers, there could be an incentive for Canada Post to contract out bargaining unit work. CUPW needed to ensure the work that RSMCs perform every day is protected.

Arbitrator MacPherson awarded the Urban and RSMC bargaining units the same wage increases as follows: 2018: 2.0%; 2019: 2.0%; 2020: 2.5%; 2021: 2.9%; The RSMC increases are effective January 1st of each year and the Urban increases are effective February 1st of each year as these are the effective dates of the collective agreements. The duration of each agreement is 4 years.

Arbitrator MacPherson maintained the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in the Urban contract and introduced it into the RSMC contract in accordance with the terms of the 2018 Pay equity award of Arbitrator Flynn. The terms of the COLA are the same as agreed to by the parties.

*This bulletin applies to those who retire on or after June 11, 2020. Now that Arbitrator MacPherson has come down with her decision on the Urban and RSMC contracts, many members are thinking of retiring. We want to explain what members are entitled to when it comes to benefits when they retire and what their obligations are when they want to retire*. Coverage for post-retirement benefits are for eligible retirees, their eligible dependents or surviving dependents. Life Insurance coverage only applies to eligible retirees and not their dependents.

During the arbitration process imposed through Bill C-89, CUPW proposed many changes to the payment of hours worked by RSMCs, including regular, overtime, and weekend hours. For us, it is inconceivable that a worker would not be paid for all his or her hours of work.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Today, June 5, the negotiating committees returned to the bargaining table. With the help of federal mediators, the Union is ready to bring these negotiations to a successful conclusion. Our goal has remained the same from day one: to reach new collective agreements that meet the needs of postal workers, while ensuring a strengthened public post office.

Wednesday, June 4, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, called on both the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post to return to the bargaining table. Today June 5, we have started that process, meetings are now underway. The Minister has requested both parties to focus on two key priorities: working with federal mediators to negotiate terms for an arbitration process, and continuing efforts to reach settlements for new collective agreements.

On Tuesday June 3, 2025, CUPW filed an unfair labour practice complaint against Canada Post under sections 94 (1) and 97 (1) of the Canada Labour Code. The complaint stems from the employer bargaining directly with members, knowingly interfering with the Union’s exclusive bargaining rights and purposefully trying to discredit the reputation of the Union.

On May 30, Canada Post sent a letter to Minister Patty Hajdu, responsible for Jobs and Families, asking her to use her power under section 108.1 of the Canada Labour Code to force a vote on the Employer’s latest offers for both bargaining units.

Today, May 30, CUPW met with Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, and John Zerucelli, Secretary of State for Labour. It was our second meeting with them since they were appointed to their positions after the federal election. At the meeting, we shared our thoughts and concerns about negotiations and the recent global offers from Canada Post. We were assured that the Minister would continue to play an intermediary role in the bargaining process but will not intervene at this time.

Media Advisory - OTTAWA - Canada Post’s plan will result in sweeping changes to our public postal system’s regulatory framework. The Corporation’s most recent contract offers to CUPW don’t drop its proposed rollbacks. When combined, this is sure to result in service and job cuts.

Wildfire season is early again this year. Fires are already raging in the northern part of the Prairies, in some Eastern provinces and in more isolated locations across the country. This is simply a reminder that we need to be ready to respond when such a situation arises again this year. In fact, some communities in Manitoba have received evacuation notices, and it is very likely that others will have to be evacuated over the coming weeks. In some part of Canada, the winter was mild with very little precipitation, increasing the risk of outbreaks. Therefore, we must once again be vigilant and ready to take the necessary measures to ensure everyone’s safety.
