On December 7, 2012 Canada Post announced its intent to implement mandatory security screening for all employees, as set out in a “Practice Regarding Security Screening of Personnel.” Under this process, the employer would subject employees to criminal record checks and, in some instances, fingerprinting and credit and solvency checks.

November 26, 2014 OTTAWA - Canada Post is reporting yet another profit in its third quarter and expects to end the year with a surplus. The union representing postal workers says the profits show that Canada Post can stay successful without eliminating home delivery.

For Immediate Release OTTAWA - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is applauding the NDP proposal to raise the minimum federal wage to $15 an hour. The union says the proposal is good news for CUPW members working on contract for Canada Post via hiring agencies for much lower wages. “A $15/hour minimum wage would really help our private sector members who work for Adecco across the country,” said Cathy Kennedy, CUPW negotiator. The CUPW is currently bargaining for a first collective agreement for Adecco workers in the Canada Customs section of postal processing plants in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.

When will I be receiving my copy of the collective agreement? Many have asked this question, and rightly so. This question is raised after every round of negotiations, but this time even more acutely. I am pleased to report that the proofreading, revision and layout process has finally been completed. You should receive your copy by mid-November.

Many locals and members have been asking when the contract books for the new RSMC collective agreements will be coming. We have now received advance copies of the new RSMC contract books at National Office. They should be available to members in the locals in approximately 2 weeks.

Media reports indicate that the federal government has agreed to give Europeans more market access to our postal services as a result of negotiations over the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The term "market access" is used in trade agreements to refer to conditions relating to market entry, such as tariffs or customs regulations and procedures. However, it traditionally means providing greater entrance to a market. As you may recall, the government increased access to our postal market in 2010 when it deregulated international letters. It is possible that the government has locked in its deregulation of outbound international mail through CETA, which would prevent a future government from being able to reverse this move. CUPW has written to Steve Verheul, Canada's Chief negotiator for CETA, asking for more information. We are also attempting to arrange a meeting with Verheul.

Volume 41, Number 1, March 2013 - CUPW members in both the urban and rural bargaining units have ratified their respective collective agreements. Both agreements were achieved only after lengthy negotiations. In the case of the urban unit, the settlement was negotiated as part of the final offer selection process established pursuant to the back-to-work legislation imposed by the Harper government. The rural agreement was reached as part of a negotiated settlement without government intervention, but the possibility of back-to-work legislation was a factor in the union’s decision to recommend acceptance.

The employer will provide us with any demands that they may have in about a week.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

OTTAWA – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and app-based delivery workers have grave concerns about Ontario’s Supporting Local Restaurants Act, which aims to limit fees charged by third-party food delivery operations, like Uber Eats and DoorDash. While the Act may help small businesses, it provides little protection to couriers making the deliveries, whose wages may be threatened as companies look for ways to make up the lost revenue from the capped fees.

For many people in North America, today is the biggest shopping day of year. On Black Friday, people search for deals, while many workers do their best to accommodate demand. I will not be partaking in Black Friday shopping. Instead, I will remember that two years ago, on November 27, 2018, Prime Minister Trudeau ordered striking postal workers back to work, without any resolution to our issues.

We all deserve to feel safe at work. And if something happens, if we experience violence or harassment, there should be an easy and safe way to report our experiences. However, we know all too well that there are many barriers to reporting, and oftentimes, victims suffer in silence. This cycle needs to stop.

Last Sunday, November 22, at midnight, Canada Post announced a new policy to make face coverings mandatory for employees, contractors, visitors and customers in its facilities across the country. This requirement applies but is not limited to, plant floors, depots, retail outlets, docks and yards, and administrative sites. It also applies to Canada Post employees while working in other facilities, such as multi-unit residential buildings, stores, offices and their common areas, such as entrances, lobbies and hallways.

As the second wave of COVID unfolds, CUPW has emerging concerns that we're keeping a close watch on: a) we're seeing rising numbers of confirmed cases among our membership, and b) we now know of cases of workplace transmission, which is something that we fortunately did not face in wave one. This may bring us new issues to deal with.
