Re: Additional Concerns about Phase 2 of Canada Post Review

We have been informed that the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates will not be accepting submissions when the Committee holds public consultations this fall in connection with the Canada Post Review.

As you know, the acceptance of briefs or submissions is normal practice for Committees. Unfortunately, the Standing Committee in question has decided to depart from this practice. It will only conduct e-consultations and hear witnesses in a number of locations. This process will most likely exclude close to 20% of Canadians who do not have access to the Internet (Source: Statistics Canada, 2012).

While we understand that people will be able to request paper versions of the Committee’s e-survey, it is not clear how people will know they have this option. Most information about the review is online. Does the government or Standing Committee intend to advertise the public consultations and the various ways of having input?

We would like to suggest that, at the minimum, all MPs be requested to circulate information about Phase 2 of review and how to participate.

We would also like to urge you to use your considerable influence to encourage the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates to accept submissions.
