Climate Action – Our Workers And Our Communities Can’t Wait

On June 17, 2019, the Canadian government declared a climate emergency, passing a motion through parliament calling climate change a “real and urgent crisis, driven by human activity.” 

This doesn’t shock us. We already know that our country is warming up twice as fast as the rest of the world and that it is becoming increasingly difficult for our planet to breathe. 

For many years, we have advocated that Canada Post can and should play a key role in addressing its own ecological footprint. We know the central role the post office can play in creating a sustainable tomorrow. Through Delivering Community Power, we have outlined a path forward. 

We have organized with allies, talked to municipalities and to all levels of governments, educated our families, neighbours and friends about our ambitious vision for the post office. 

Our hard work is starting to pay off. 

Canada Post and its bargaining agents – the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, the Association of Postal Officials of Canada, the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association and the Union of Postal Communications Employees – have acknowledged a shared interest and responsibility to reduce Canada Post’s environmental footprint. Today’s joint statement is the first step. 

We will work with the other bargaining units to improve Canada Post’s environmental performance. We will first focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, waste and single use plastics at Canada Post. 

Early next year, we intend to publish a plan with ambitious targets. Every step of the way, we will be there to push Canada Post to always do better. Our planet can’t afford for us to wait.
