Looking at the Month Ahead: Important Dates

2023-2027/236

The past several months have been very busy for the Union. And in the month ahead, there is still more to come: a federal election, the Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC) report, Canada Post’s 2024 annual report, and the end of the extension of our collective agreements. We know members have lots of questions about what is going to happen, especially after the extensions of our collective agreements.

As always, our priority remains securing good collective agreements for both the RSMC and Urban units at the bargaining table. It is our goal to achieve this before the extension of our collective agreements to May 22 expires. To that end, we have reached out to Canada Post to schedule meetings to re-start negotiations as early as possible.

While we hope to have new tentative agreements before May 22, we will highlight some important dates in the month ahead.

April 28: Federal Election

The federal election is Monday, April 28.

The truth is we can’t say for sure who will win.

That’s why it’s so important to get out and vote. Elections aren’t just about choosing a leader—they’re about showing up for the issues that matter to us. Every ballot cast is a message to those in power that we’re paying attention, and we’re not backing down when it comes to protecting our jobs, our communities, and public services.

Make your voice heard. Make your vote count.

Early May: Canada Post 2024 Annual Report

At some point in early May, Canada Post will release its annual report for 2024. Like last year, the Corporation will likely use its report to generate media coverage and make the case for sweeping changes to postal services and our collective agreements.

May 15: Industrial Inquiry Commission Report

Under his terms of reference, Commissioner William Kaplan must give his report and recommendations to the Minister of Labour no later than May 15. It is our understanding CUPW and Canada Post will be advised of the content of the report on May 22, so we will not know its recommendations until the day the collective agreements expire.

May 22: Last day of the extended Collective Agreements

Under the government’s section 107 order, our collective agreements were renewed until May 22. As noted, we hope to secure new agreements before then, but there are at least four possible scenarios for what may happen if we do not reach new agreements:

  • The Employer could lock us out
  • The Employer could impose major changes to our working conditions, or – like last year – start issuing layoff notices to our members
  • The Union could continue strike action
  • The Government could intervene again.

Stay Strong, Stay United

The month ahead of us is an important one. While there is a lot of uncertainty about what will happen – none of us can predict the future – one thing is clear: The Union is strongest when its members stand together in solidarity. To achieve the good collective agreements we deserve, we need the active support of all members – now more than ever. This is one of the reasons why the work of our Hands Off My Post Office! campaign is so important.
