Negotiations Bulletin No. 12

On March 21, 2016 the CUPW Negotiating Committee sent the attached letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Gender Equality and the RSMCs

The first reason that we wrote this letter was to congratulate the Prime Minister for the “special commendation” that he recently received for his work promoting gender equality. The second and more important reason was to inform the Prime Minister of the lack of gender equality within Canada Post. We explained to the Prime Minister that the RSMC bargaining unit does essentially the same work, in the same offices and even on the same streets at times as the letter carriers in the Urban bargaining unit. Despite this, the female-dominated RSMC bargaining unit get paid, on average, 28% less than the largely male-dominated letter carriers in the Urban bargaining unit. The RSMCs also get less in benefits.

What Can the Government Do?

The letter calls on the Government to investigate this situation and instruct Canada Post to address this issue. This is 2016. Women should receive the same pay and benefits as men for the same work.

What Can You Do?

Read the attached letter and meet, write or call your local Member of Parliament and encourage them to support taking action to end this gender discrimination at Canada Post.

Your support is crucial to the success of these negotiations.

Stay informed, participate in union actions, and proudly express your solidarity.
