This year, CUPW is proud to celebrate the Pride season under the theme "Workers United Against Hate" proposed by the Canadian Labour Congress. As we face a shocking rise in anti-LGBTQ hate in Canada and around the world, this theme is more important than ever.
We must continue to put into practice the fundamental principle of the labour movement stating that an injury to one is an injury to all. Attacks on members of the LGBTQ community, particularly trans and non-binary people, have intensified in recent years. In several provinces, governments have passed laws that directly target young people, restricting access to gender-affirming care, and creating unsafe environments for students in schools. These policies are causing real harm and creating conditions of fear and exclusion.
The rise of far-right governments around the world have threatened the hard-won rights and safety of LGBTQ people. We’ve seen an increase in anti-LGBTQ policies close to homer in the United States as well as the decision by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom which bases the definition of a woman on biological sex - paving the way for discrimination against transgender people, to name a few.
Let's not be fooled: anti-LGBTQ hate is a work problem like any other. Discrimination, harassment, and violence impacts our members, both at work and in the communities where we live. Our union stands firmly against all forms of hate and will always stand up for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ workers.
As we do every year during the Pride season, we encourage locals and members to unite their voices to fight against discrimination, and to show their pride by participating in local Pride events, whenever possible.
Pride is not just a celebration; it is also a call to action. In the face of growing hate, CUPW reaffirms its commitment to stand in solidarity with LGBTQ workers and communities. Together, we can and must fight back and build a future based on equality and justice.
