If you have a child with a disability, you might qualify for CUPW’s Special Needs Child Care Project under Appendix "L" or Appendix “J” of the Collective Agreement (Child Care Fund).

CUPW members who have children with disabilities and other special needs are eligible for financial assistance of $200/month for child care needs and related expenses, such as equipment, support workers and transportation. This project helps "level the playing field," bringing the costs of child care and related expenses of members with special needs closer to what other CUPW parents pay. It also recognizes the additional barriers that some of our members face in caring for children with disabilities.

The Special Needs Project is a national project for members who have children (birth to 19 years) with special needs or disabilities. Families receive the following types of support:

  • Financial help to reduce the higher costs of appropriate child care and other related services
  • Personal support by phone from one of the project’s Special Needs Advisors
  • Member-to-Member Connection newsletter twice a year
  • Educational information and resources

If you have a child with special needs, or if you would like more information, please contact the Special Needs project at:

The Moving On Project is a national project for members who have dependent adult sons and daughters (over age 19) with disabilities. Families receive the following types of support:

  • Funding for members whose adult children are dependent on their parents for care—use of funds may include additional expenses such as respite, supervision of adult son or daughter, life-skills training, transportation, tutoring and uninsured heath expenses
  • Personal support from one of the project’s Special Needs Advisors, who are familiar with resources and services for adults in each province
  • Annual teleconference discussion on a topic of interest
  • Member-to-Member Connection newsletter twice a year
  • Other educational information and resources

If you have an adult son or daughter with special needs or a disability, or if you would like more information, please contact the Moving On project at:

CUPW publishes a newsletter for our members who use these projects. The Member-to-Member Connection puts CUPW families in touch with each other so they can benefit and share their experiences of raising a child with a disability.
