In the last few years, we’ve seen huge changes in postal work. E-commerce, digital communications, and new technologies are transforming the postal and delivery industry. While internet services have replaced a large share of traditional lettermail volumes, e-commerce has driven massive fluctuations in parcels volumes. In 2019, for the first time, Canada post earned more revenue from parcels than lettermail. And since the COVID-19 pandemic, this trend has only accelerated.
Moving from a letters-first to a parcels-first business comes with lots of challenges. Most importantly, parcels are a competitive market, not covered by the Corporation’s “exclusive privilege” to deliver lettermail.
To meet this challenge, the Corporation has begun investing in new equipment (like automated parcel sortation) new software (like telematics), and in new work processes (like separate sort and delivery).
We want to know: How are you experiencing these changes in your day-to-day life on the job?
We encourage all members from the Urban and RSMC bargaining units to fill in the online survey. You can access it through the QR code provided here and on the accompanying poster. It should only take about 10 minutes to complete.
All survey responses will be kept completely confidential: No one from the Union or the Corporation will be able to identify you.
Your answers will help us identify key issues in the workplace and allow us to better represent you in negotiations and consultation with the employer and in our health and safety work. The more members take part, the stronger our hand at the bargaining table and in labour-management consultation.
In solidarity,
